Protecting Your Nerves This Winter

winter nerves

With temperatures reaching freezing point, it’s pretty clear to see that we are in the dead of winter. For many who live with pre-existing nerve pain, however, this is a major turn for the worse.  But why does cold weather aggravate such discomfort? And what can we do to reduce it?
As temperatures drop, nerve conductivity is dramatically slowed, accentuating the pain experienced by damaged nerves. Essentially, they become much more sensitive to the cold! Additionally, the cold stiffens up muscles and ligaments, which can have painful consequences for those living with arthritis.
Luckily, there are many different ways to protect our bodies from the vicious cold:

1. WEAR LONG UNDERWEAR
Being one of the larger parts of your body, we naturally lose a large portion of our body heat through our legs! Which is why it’s so important to wear leggings or long underwear during the colder days of the winter months.  And the best part is, you can wear them under your pants!

3. CUDDLE
Did you know the Eskimos used to cuddle with their dogs to stay alive during cold nights? We aren’t saying you have to cuddle with Fido tonight but it might be a good idea to grab your significant other and share some body heat!

2. WEAR ALPACA WOOL SOCKS
As you probably know already, your feet are an essential part of your health, connected with so many body systems, including the nervous.  One of the more popular materials for winter socks is Alpaca wool, which has amazing heat-retention properties.  Still not convinced? Just Google an Alpaca and look how fluffy it is! Who wouldn’t want that on their feet?

3. TAKE A WARM BATH
No amount of clothing warming you up? Sometimes the only option in extremely cold environments is to simply take a warm bath!  Let your aching muscles and joints relax and loosen up. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

4. WEAR A HAT AND SCARF
Did you know that on average, humans lose 30% of their body heat through the head area? Consequently, it’s vital to wear a warm and wooly hat that covers the ears and preferable the cheeks as well. If not, there’s always a warm scarf for that!
